Burning Bridges:

A 24-Hour Vigil for a Vanished River

Der isländische Künstler Jakob Veigar präsentiert Burning Bridges, eine 24-stündige Ausdauerperformance unter der verlassenen Skeiðarárbrú-Brücke im Skaftafell-Nationalpark, Island. Einst Islands längste Brücke, überspannte sie den Gletscherfluss Skeiðará – ein Fluss, der inzwischen durch die globale Erwärmung verschwunden ist. Die Performance verwandelt diesen Ort des Verlusts in einen Raum der Erinnerung und dringlichen Reflexion.

Siebzehn Feuer werden ununterbrochen unter dem trockenen Flussbett der Brücke brennen – sie markieren sowohl den verschwundenen Fluss als auch die bleibende Stärke der Menschen von Öræfi. Jedes Feuer steht für eines der 17 Ziele für nachhaltige Entwicklung der Vereinten Nationen und symbolisiert die weltweite Dringlichkeit ökologischer Verantwortung.

Die gesamte Performance wird live im LÁ Art Museum, im Svavarssafn Kunstmuseum sowie online übertragen und schafft so eine direkte Verbindung zwischen der abgelegenen isländischen Landschaft und einem weltweiten Publikum. Die Zuschauer:innen erleben eine Meditation über Präsenz und Abwesenheit – Feuer ersetzt das Wasser, Erinnerung ersetzt den Fluss.

Burning Bridges ist ein kraftvolles Ausdauerstück – ein Ritual der Trauer, der Resilienz und des klimabewussten Handelns. Es lädt lokale wie internationale Betrachter:innen dazu ein, über die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels nachzudenken und dem, was bereits verloren gegangen ist, zu gedenken – solange noch Zeit zum Handeln bleibt.

» Life is a struggle—a relentless journey through adversity, resilience, and redemption. As an Icelander, my heritage is steeped in the raw realities of survival. My ancestors fought to exist in a world of harsh landscapes and unforgiving weather. They were fishermen, seal hunters, and laborers, always cold, wet, and hungry, enduring poverty in a land that was, for centuries, a Danish colony. Their lives were a testament to endurance and tenacity.

This ancestral story is deeply intertwined with my own. My paintings are not only a reflection of this legacy but also a confrontation with my personal struggles. Like the Icelandic landscape—beautiful yet unyielding—I have faced the storms of my life. I lost everything to poor decisions and alcoholism, only to rebuild from the ruins. My work is a meditation on that journey, exploring themes of loss, redemption, and the delicate beauty of embracing life after chaos.

In my art, the unforgiving forces of Icelandic nature become metaphors for my own resurrection. The ever-present tension between creation and destruction mirrors my internal battles, while the landscapes evoke a sense of raw, unfiltered truth. I seek not just to depict the world but to draw a connection between human resilience and the elemental forces of nature.

Traveling beyond Iceland has expanded my perspective, allowing me to explore the struggles and triumphs of other cultures. These journeys deepen my understanding of the human experience and enrich my work with new dimensions. Each place I visit, each story I hear, becomes a thread in the fabric of my artistic narrative.

Through my paintings, I aim to convey the beauty and brutality of existence. They are about survival—not just the survival of the body but the survival of the spirit. They are about finding redemption in the storms, embracing the cold, and learning to see life, in all its struggles, as a gift. «
