Times are tough for young art. In 2025, works by artists born after 1974 achieved just USD 229.9 million at auction worldwide: 26.5% less than the previous year and around 72% less than in 2021. At the same time, more contemporary works were sold than ever before, 85% of them for under USD 5,000. So the interest is there, but prices are falling, and the big money goes to established names. For art-school graduates, breaking in is becoming ever harder.
This is exactly where the YOUNG ART AUCTION comes in. From numerous submissions, the jury selected 53 young positions. This year's jury comprises Peter Schneeberger (Head of Current Cultural Affairs at ORF, host of “Kulturmontag”), Günther Oberhollenzer (Artistic Director of the Künstlerhaus Wien), Mag. Doris Richter (Director, Leopold Fine Arts), Ursula Simacek (SIMACEK Group) and the ARTCARE team.
The selected artists are studying at art academies in Vienna, Linz, Berlin and Munich, or recently graduated from them. On show are paintings, watercolours, sculptures, objects and ceramics. Every work is offered at 50% of its usual sale price, and 90% of the hammer price goes directly to the artists. In this way, new artistic voices gain early visibility and a fair start to their professional careers.
For 19 years, the YOUNG ART AUCTION has stood for courage, quality and the deliberate development of young artists' careers. All works can be viewed online, and bids can be placed in advance. These advance bids are of course taken into account in the live auction.
